I still remember the moment I saw the Marvel Rivals Season 1.5 balance notes. As someone who spends way too much time thinking about hero viability, I immediately started re-evaluating my mains. NetEase clearly wanted to shake up the support-heavy meta while giving some underwhelming Duelists and Vanguards a chance to shine. Did they get it right? I think the answer is mostly yes, even if a few buffs feel a little too generous.

Let me break down my impressions hero by hero, starting with the Vanguards.

🛡️ Vanguard Changes

Magneto

Magneto's Metallic Curtain used to feel like a reliable two-second panic button, but now it lasts only 1.5 seconds. Can Magneto still anchor the frontline? Honestly, the change makes his shield feel much more like a timing tool than a safety net. I need to be far more disciplined about when I pop it, especially since it already had a short duration compared to Doctor Strange's barrier. The compensation comes in his primary attack, which now hits for 40 damage instead of 35. Is that enough to make up for the defensive loss? It is not a huge buff, but it does make his slower attack speed feel a little less punishing. I see Magneto becoming a more offense-minded Vanguard, one who punishes out-of-position enemies rather than simply holding space forever.

Groot

Groot's Thornlash Wall placement range increasing from 15 to 18 meters is a quiet but meaningful quality-of-life improvement. Before the patch, I often had to waddle dangerously close to the enemy team just to place a wall in the right spot. Now I can cut off healers or block a retreat from a much safer angle. This makes Groot even more of a spatial controller, and I expect to see him become a bigger headache for Duelists who rely on closing distance. The buff may not look flashy, but for anyone who plays Groot as a team-focused Vanguard, it opens up much safer playmaking potential.

Venom

Venom has always felt like a disruptor, but sometimes his own knockback worked against him. Frenzied Arrival now pulls enemies inward instead of pushing them away, which is huge for combo potential. I can slam into the backline, drag targets closer, and immediately follow up with Cellular Corrosion or Feast of the Abyss. Speaking of the ultimate, its energy cost dropped from 2800 to 2500. Since Feast of the Abyss can feel a little lacking in raw damage compared to other ultimates, seeing it available more often is a welcome change. Venom still needs a coordinated team to truly shine, but this patch makes his engage far more consistent.

Captain America

Captain America received more changes than any other hero, and I am honestly thrilled. His hit-and-run identity finally feels fully supported. I can now activate my shield during Fearless Leap, which means I can dive the enemy backline without melting on the way in. Being able to use melee attacks during the leap also helps me deal with airborne targets or finish off a fleeing healer. The improved shield projectile speed, reaching up to 150m/s when ricocheting, makes his poke much more reliable. On top of that, Freedom Charge now costs 2800 instead of 3100, so I can buff my team far more often during intense fights. Is this enough to make Cap a top-tier Vanguard? I believe he is now a legitimate main for players who love constant pressure and quick rotations.

⚔️ Duelist Changes

Black Widow

Black Widow finally received the glow-up she needed. Before this patch, I felt like I was spending half the match reloading, but now her rifle holds 15 shots instead of 8. That alone makes her damage output far more consistent. Her ultimate is also much scarier: the slow increases from 50% to 80%, and affected enemies take extra damage for four seconds. This creates excellent combo potential. I can debuff the enemy team and let my fellow Duelists clean up, or I can switch to batons and finish targets myself. For the first time in a while, Black Widow feels like a real pick rather than a niche harassment character.

Mister Fantastic

Mister Fantastic's ultimate always felt more silly than threatening, but that changes now. Each bounce deals 70 damage instead of 50, which makes it much easier to eliminate Strategists and low-HP Duelists. The longer charge time is a fair trade, because when it finally lands, it should matter. His Flexible Elongation range is also doubled, and it now knocks back enemies. That extra reach helps me engage from distance or push someone off an objective at a critical moment. Mister Fantastic still is not the fastest Duelist, but his ability to control space from mid-range makes him a much more dangerous team fighter.

Iron Man

Why did Iron Man get buffed when he was already considered one of the strongest Duelists? I asked myself that question the moment I read the notes. His Unibeam now deals 140 damage per second, and with Armor Overdrive active, it can reach up to 190 damage per second. That is absolutely terrifying if left unchecked. With Mantis or Storm amplifying him further, Iron Man can delete enemy Duelists and Strategists from the sky. He still may not melt Vanguards as easily, but the beam pressure is enough to force constant cover and disrupt entire pushes. I expect more teams to build around keeping their Iron Man alive.

Iron Fist

Iron Fist mains might be worried about the damage reductions to Jeet Kune Do and Yet Jee Kuen, but I actually like the new direction. The lower burst means he cannot simply hold forward and melt health bars as effortlessly as before. In return, Harmony Recovery now restores up to 150 health instead of 50, and his base health goes from 250 to 300. This transforms him into a sustain-focused brawler who survives longer and rewards smart hit-and-run play. Will old Iron Fist mains adapt? I think so, because the extra durability allows for more creative outplay potential even if the burst feels less explosive.

💉 Strategist Changes

Cloak & Dagger

Cloak & Dagger's stacking ultimate was a huge problem, so I understand why NetEase pulled it back. Previously, dashing through the same ally multiple times could stack healing to absurd levels. Now that stacking is gone, players are encouraged to spread dashes across the entire team. The saving grace is that each dash heals for 250, which is still enough to keep a push alive. The improved dash control also helps, because changing direction always felt clunky. Did Cloak & Dagger need another adjustment? Yes, and I think this version keeps the hero strong without making the ultimate an instant team-wide immortality button.

📋 Quick Summary Table

Hero Role Biggest Change My Impression
Magneto Vanguard Shield 2s to 1.5s, primary 35 to 40 damage More precise, slightly better damage
Groot Vanguard Wall placement range 15m to 18m Safer wall setups
Captain America Vanguard Shield during leap, ult cost down Huge mobility and pressure
Venom Vanguard Slam pulls enemies, ult cost down Better engage and combo potential
Black Widow Duelist 15 shots, 80% slow plus damage taken Bigger combo threat
Mister Fantastic Duelist Range doubled, ult 70 damage per bounce Better finisher
Iron Man Duelist Unibeam 140/190 damage per second Sky terror
Iron Fist Duelist Damage down, heal 150, base HP 300 Sustain over burst
Cloak & Dagger Strategist No stack, 250 heal per dash Still strong, less passive

Will these changes be enough to shift the meta away from triple Strategist? I am not entirely sure, but they certainly give Duelists and Vanguards more tools to punish passive support play. For me, Season 1.5 feels like a step toward a more active, aggressive version of Marvel Rivals, and I cannot wait to see how the community adapts.
